January at the Farm

January 2015

Our winter daydreams are filled with visions of vibrant, just-picked greens and vegetables. Signs of emerging life have begun to appear around the farm in the form of plump buds on otherwise bare twigs of flowering perennials and dormant trees.

The nighttime voices of nesting owl pairs echo from the woods surrounding the farm, quieting as dawn approaches. Barely perceptible increases in day length and subtle changes in the scent of the air signal the approach of spring.

Packages of fresh seeds have begun arriving, and we’re making plans for our eleventh CSA year. Life is good.

The Most Excellent Season

What is the most excellent season of the year? Ah, but the answer is complex. Each season is certainly unique in its flavors; possessing its own individual magic. And there are sub-seasons within the seasons, such as “early spring” and “late winter,” that further complicate the answer. In the Maritime Pacific Northwest, each season has wonderful attributes.

Winter in the Maritime Pacific Northwest brings with it peace and loveliness and calm. In the forest, fall winds have long since stripped the browns and tans of the conifers’ spent needles, leaving healthy shades of various greens. Deciduous trees and shrubs have long since shed their leafy canopies, showing off smooth or rough… Read More

Wonderful Slaw Recipe

Our neighbor, Sharon, just brought over a dish of wonderful slaw. I asked her for her recipe, and here it is:
• Kolhrabi, peeled and shredded (I’d use a food processor if you have one).
• Dressing: 2 Tablespoons each: Mayo, sugar, vinegar, and milk, whisked together. (substitute honey for sugar if you like)
• Salt and pepper to taste.

That’s it, and boy is it juicy and yummy!

Thank you, Sharon!
